Biographical/Historical Note
Peter Hanger was born March 29, 1807, in Boone County, Kentucky, to Frederick and Margaret Mathews Hanger. Peter came to Arkansas in 1834. In 1837, he served in the General Assembly as the representative from Chicot County. He moved to Little Rock in 1848. He had several business interests, including a government contract to carry mail by stagecoach and steamship throughout Arkansas. He was part owner of the Anthony House, a hotel in Little Rock, and was instrumental in organizing the first telegraph company in the state. On June 18, 1850, Peter married Matilda Cunningham, the daughter of Eliza and Dr. Matthew Cunningham, Little Rock's first mayor and one of the town's earliest physicians. Matilda died in 1865, and Peter married Ann M. Gaines on May 23, 1866. He died February 24, 1895, and was buried at Mount Holly Cemetery in Little Rock.
