This transcript was handwritten by Albert Pike during the trial of J.A. Fears, but it is only a portion of the trial.
Biographical/Historical Note
J.A. Fears was tried in the Pulaski County (Ark.) Circuit Court on a manslaughter charges on March 23,1841. The victim in the trial transcript is simply referred to as S. with no other identification. The state was represented by Robert W. Johnson, while the defense was provided by Pike, Cocker, and Cummins. The jury found J.A. Fears guilty, and he was sentenced to a fine of $1000 and a day of imprisonment. However, the jury unanimously recommended that the fine be remitted by the Governor.
