Description

This collection contains correspondence written by Arkansas governors and senators, collected byWalter Dormitzer. Biographical newsclippings about the politicians are included with some of thecorrespondence.

Biographical/Historical Note

Walter Dormitzer was born in 1862 to Henry and Anna Dormitzer, Bohemian immigrants. He was animporter/exporter who traveled extensively, collecting art and historical memorabilia. He lived in Nigeriaduring the late 1800s and collected Yoruba art that he later donated to the Newark (New Jersey) Museum.His autograph books are highly sought after and contain autographs of the signers of the Declaration ofIndependence. He owned the Watson and Dormitzer firm with his partner Calvin A. Watson. He and hiswife Carrie Auerbach were members of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Essex County, NewJersey. He died August 15, 1935, from the effects of malaria contracted when he lived in Africa.
