This collection contains records pertaining to monthly returns of clothing, camp and garrison equipage, received and issued, abstracts of materials, and one certificate of transfer of clothing from Company G,2nd Arkansas Volunteers of African Descent, United States Army, during the Civil War.
Biographical/Historical Note
The Second Arkansas Infantry-African Descent (54th U.S. Colored Infantry) was formed after the Emancipation Proclamation by primarily freed slaves out of the Arkansas River Valley. This unit was under the commands of Lieutenant Colonel George W. De Costa and Major George W. Burchard and participated in battles across the state of Arkansas, including the Battle of Helena.
