Description

This collection contains letters written during the Civil War by Confederate soldier Isaac Brownlow to his wife.

Biographical/Historical Note

Isaac Newton Brownlow was born in Tennessee in 1820. He married Edna Frances "Fannie" Wallace(also known as Eady Frances Pelley) of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, in Carroll County, Mississippi, March 12, 1863. Fannie and Isaac had one son, Samuel L. Brownlow. Isaac joined Company C, 5th Mississippi Cavalry, Confederate States Army, August 7, 1863. He was listed on his company's muster roll as "Absent without leave February 21, 1864." He was taken prisoner by the Union Army at Nashville, Tennessee, on December 15, 1864, and later died at Camp Douglas, Illinois, February 18, 1865.
