This collection contains a photocopy of a census for Arkansas Post for 1723 in French.
Biographical/Historical Note
Arkansas Post was the first European settlement in the lower Mississippi River Valley and present-day Arkansas. It was established by Henri de Tonti in 1686 as a French trading post on the banks of the lower Arkansas River. It changed locations and ownership several times over the next 100 years, but became part of the United States after the Louisiana Purchase if 1803. By 1819, it was the largest city in the region and was selected as the Arkansas Territory's first capital. The capital was moved to Little Rock in 1821.
