Description
This collection consists of one scrapbook containing news clippings about World War II soldiers visiting El Dorado, Arkansas. News clippings note how churches, civic groups, and private citizens went out of their way to provide entertainment, food, shelter, and baths to soldiers in the area.
Biographical/Historical Note
This scrapbook includes the inscription, "presented to the El Dorado Ark. Public Library by Lou Arden (Andrews) Murphy, May 1984, in memory of her mother, Faye Gladys Andrews (Mrs. Arden D. [Dudley]). Lou Arden Andrews Murphy (February 20, 1929-December 27, 2014) was born to Arden Dudley and Faye Gladys (Cartwright) Andrews in El Dorado, Arkansas. She graduated from El Dorado High School in 1947 and studied journalism at Syracuse University (NY). Lou began working for the airlines industry and married pilot Robert J. Murphy, living and traveling around the United States. Lou wrote a weekly humor column for the Estes Park Trail-Gazette in Colorado entitled, "Mrs. Murphy's Chowder" and coauthored a three-part book, "A Southern Legacy: Descendants of John Muse of Virginia." She is buried with her husband in St. Petersburg, Florida. Newspaper clippings are most likely from the El Dorado News-Times.
