Biographical/Historical Note
Isaac McCoy was born in Pennsylvania in 1784, after which his family moved to Kentucky where his father served as a Baptist minister. His early upbringing led the young McCoy to become a missionary to Native Americans in what is now Indiana, Michigan, and Missouri. Isaac McCoy was one of the leading voices in Native removal from the "corrupting influences attending association with the frontier people." McCoy conducted extensive surveys of the country to the west and north of Arkansas and reported his finding to the suitability of Indian Settlement in that region of the United States territory.
