Description

This collection contains three letters from John Lemon to his father and sister in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, during the Civil War, and one broadside from Shreveport News. In John’s letters, he talks about the war and the death of his mother, Martha.

Biographical/Historical Note

John Owen Lemon was born in Tennessee to Robert and Martha Dancy Lemon on January 26, 1836. John lived in Natchitoches, Louisiana, working as an Overseer when the Civil War began in 1861. He joined the Louisiana Infantry 2nd Regiment on May 11, 1861, and he served until he was arrested and paroled by the United States military at Appomattox County, Virginia, on April 9, 1865.
