Description

This collection contains a diary kept by George McDonald of the 4th Iowa Cavalry and an encased tintype photograph of McDonald in his military uniform. The diary gives a detailed account of McDonald's daily activity during his military service.

Biographical/Historical Note

George McDonald (1845-1865) of Leon, Iowa enlisted as a Private in Company B, 4th Iowa Cavalry on Aug 21, 1863. He later transferred to Company G, 4th Iowa Cavalry. He was wounded in action on November 12, 1864, near Cane Hill, Arkansas, and taken prisoner by Confederate guerrillas. He returned to his unit, and was later discharged with the rest of his company on August 8, 1865, in Atlanta. McDonald died from his wounds on September 23, 1865.
