Description
This collection contains two letters written by James R. Burke to his wife, Christianna, in Bradley County, Arkansas in 1862. These letters discuss family life, farm business, and how glad he is to be at Fort Hindman.
Biographical/Historical Note
James R. Burke (also spelled Burk) was born in Alabama about 1830. Burke joined the Confederate States Army in Crawford’s Battalion, Company B, Arkansas Infantry, during the Civil War. He was captured by Union Forces at Fort Hindman at the Battle of Arkansas Post on January 11, 1863. Burke was then taken to the Confederate Military Prison at Camp Douglas, Illinois, arriving on February 8, 1863. He died from typhoid fever on March 18, 1863, in the prison camp, and is buried at the Confederate Mound at Oak Woods Cemetery Chicago, Illinois. James R. Burke was married to Christianna Wheeler Burke. The couple had a total of six children.
