This collection contains one letterbook of outgoing correspondence of Arkansas Governor Powell Clayton from January 4 through September 24, 1870.
Biographical/Historical Note
Powell Clayton served as Arkansas's ninth governor during some of the turbulent years of Reconstruction, 1868-1871. An officer in the Union Army during the Civil War, he came to Arkansas in 1863. After the war, he remained in the state and became governor in 1868. Clayton left office in 1871 to become one of Arkansas’s United States senators. He died in 1914 in Washington, District of Columbia.
