Description
This collection consists of letters concerning the donation of books belonging to Powell Clayton and the subject of well digging in Eureka Springs.
Biographical/Historical Note
Powell Clayton was a Union general who settled in Arkansas after the Civil War. He became the state's first governor after its readmission to the Union. He was born in Bethel Township, Pennsylvania, on August 7, 1833, to John Clayton and Ann Clark Clayton. He studied civil engineering in Wilmington, Delaware and then moved to Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1855 to work as a surveyor. He first entered politics when he successfully for city engineer in 1860 in Leavenworth. In May 1861, Clayton joined the Union army. He mustered out of service in 1865. On December 14, 1865, he married Adaline McGraw of Helena. Clayton was inaugurated as governor on July 2, 1868. He died in Washington D.C. on August 25, 1914, and is buried in Arlington Cemetery.
