The passenger lists index cards are arranged alphabetically. The slave manifests are in order by date of arrival or departure.
Biographical/Historical Note
Ships coming to the United States developed passenger lists describing immigrants' arrival. The records' content varies greatly. The National Archives created this card index to facilitate research, listing passenger, ship, and ports of departure and arrival. Slave manifests are lists of slaves on incoming and outgoing ships. Information includes age, sex, and sometimes first names.
