Biographical/Historical Note

Jared (Jarrad, Jarred) Carswell Martin was born October 11, 1796, in the Cherokee Indian Nation in Georgia, the son of John and Elizabeth Martin. The family emigrated to Missouri Territory shortly after the Louisiana Purchase and settled near Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Jared, along with some other members of his family, came to Pulaski County, Arkansas Territory, in 1821, where he acquired land at Little Rock and at Mabelvale, Arkansas. He married Mary (Polly) Douglass in 1827. From 1840 to 1842, he served in the Arkansas House of Representatives. From 1843 to 1845, he served as Arkansas State Treasurer. Martin died November 7, 1857, and is buried in the Martin Cemetery near Mabelvale, Arkansas. He is often confused with his nephew, Jared C. Martin, who served as Arkansas State Treasurer from 1860 to 1861.
