Description
This collection contains 17 boxes of records from the meetings of the Little Rock School Board from the years 1956 to 1979.
Biographical/Historical Note
In 1957, the Little Rock School District's plan to integrate its high schools became the focus of a national news story. This collection provides insight into the administrative decisions made by the school board in the year leading up to that event, as well as during and afterwards. Among numerous documents crucial to understanding the political climate of time, this collection includes the minutes from the November 12, 1958, meeting in which the school board, frustrated over Governor Faubus' closure of Little Rock high schools, bought out Superintendent Virgil T. Blossom's contract and tendered their resignation, triggering a consequential special election.
