Biographical/Historical Note
The Dardanelle Independent was a newspaper founded in Dardanelle, Yell County, Arkansas, on January 7, 1875 by David P. Cloyd and Joseph F. Thomason. By late August-early September 1875, the paper was purchased by a new publisher, Dr. Marion "Merry" Monroe McGuire. After a series of title changes, the newspaper became the Independent Arkansian on August 10, 1877 and would continue to be published under that name until suspending and later ceasing publication in September 1883. Two other papers were published out of Dr. M. M. McGuire's office, the Western Immigrant and the Arkansas Methodist. The Western Immigrant was published by M.L. Davis from 1877 to 1881, and the Arkansas Methodist was published by Reverend James Harralson in the 1870s and 1880s. This collection was donated to the Arkansas State Archives by the family of M.M. McGuire. He was born on November 28, 1836 in Mayfield, Kentucky, and died on June 27, 1886 in Dardanelle, Arkansas.
