Description
The collection contains materials related to Arkansas's African American history. It includes biographical information, correspondence, church, school, and miscellaneous programs, and fraternal organizations. It also includes programs and journals of the Arkansas Teachers' Association (A.T.A.). The Arkansas Teachers' Association was a professional organization for Arkansas's African American teachers. It was established in 1898 on the campus of Branch Normal College, now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. In November 1968, the Arkansas Teachers' Association held its last convention in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and merged with the Arkansas Education Association (A.E.A.) on July 1, 1969.
Biographical/Historical Note
Archie Moore, Jr. was born in Little Rock, Arkansas. A graduate of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Moore began working for the United States Postal Service in 1989, where he remained employed for over 26 years. Moore was active in the historical community and served as a member of the Arkansas and National chapters of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society, served on the board of the Arkansas Humanities Council, and was a member and historian at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was also an antique dealer and collector specializing in Black Americana.
