Biographical/Historical Note
The Arkansas Post was the first significant European establishment in Arkansas, built in 1686 by Henri de Tonti as a French trading post on the Arkansas River. It was acquired by the United States in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase and was the site of an official U.S. trading factory from 1805-1810. It was designated as the first capital of the Arkansas Territory in 1819.
