Biographical/Historical Note

After the Civil War, military and old-age pensions were developed for former soldiers and their widows and orphans, but the systems were different. Union veterans received their payments from the federal government as early as 1861, while it took some time longer, some as late as the 1890s, for the Confederate veterans to receive payments from their individual states.
