Description
This collection contains personal and business correspondence, St. John's College documents, Civil War material, and Arkansas State Guard documents. The majority of the correspondence in this collection concerns Samuel Williams and his family and is business related. Also included are Confederate and Union Army muster rolls, rosters, payrolls, receipts, and correspondence.
Biographical/Historical Note
Samuel Wright Williams was born in 1828 in South Carolina. His family moved to Washington, Arkansas, in 1842. After becoming an attorney in 1851, he practiced law in Brownsville, and then Little Rock with his brother, W.L.D. Williams. At the start of the Civil War, Samuel Williams was appointed to the Military Board of Arkansas and he helped raise and equip the Confederate army in Arkansas. Following the Civil War, he was elected prosecuting attorney, and later state senator in 1876. Williams was a long time advocate of railroads in Arkansas and an active member of the Masonic Lodge in Little Rock. He died at Little Rock March 14, 1900.
