This collection contains a certificate of appointment for James H. Conley as Aide-de-Camp of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization of veterans of the Union Army, Union Navy, and the Marines who served in the Civil War. It was founded in 1866 in Springfield, Illinois, and grew to include hundreds of local units across the United States. It was dissolved in 1956 after the death of its last member, Albert Woolson of Duluth, Minnesota.
