Description

This collection contains a photostat of a family tree for the Lee family of Virginia and Maryland.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Lee family is a historically significant Virginia and Maryland political family. The family became prominent in colonial British North America when Richard Lee immigrated to Virginia in 1639. The family includes several men who held political offices, as well as Francis Lightfoot Lee and Richard Henry Lee, signers of the American Declaration of Independence. Robert E. Lee is probably the most famous member of the Lee family. He was a Confederate general during the Civil War and later was President of Washington and Lee University, which was named for him and George Washington. Washington and Lee University houses Lee Chapel, the burial site of several members of the Lee family.
