Description
This collection contains a pardon and amnesty granted J.D. Willett of Little Rock by President Andrew Johnson.
Biographical/Historical Note
After the American Civil War, Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson extended pardons to certain ex-Confederates as part of reconstruction. Lincoln's plan for pardons included an oath of allegiance to the United States and did not restore ownership of slaves or property taken by a third party. When Andrew Johnson became president, he increased the number of exemptions from general amnesty, although those excluded could apply for a special pardon, and some southern leaders fled the country. However, he issued far more pardons than Lincoln did, including several high level ex-Confederates.
