Description
This collection contains a broadside of President Lincoln’s appeal to the Union, in order to call up militia troops after the attack on Fort Sumter.
Biographical/Historical Note
Three days after the attack on Fort Sumter, President Abraham Lincoln called forth state militias, a total of 75,000 troops, to put down the rebellion of Confederate troops against the Union. A great number of citizens in the North answered the proclamation to serve for three months, but some Southern states refused to send troops against their neighbors and most of them would eventually join the Confederate States themselves.
