Description
This collection contains a report on the Battle of Prairie Grove by General Hindman from December 25, 1862.
Biographical/Historical Note
The Battle of Prairie Grove was fought on December 7, 1862 in Washington County between the Union Army of the Frontier, commanded by Brigadier General James G. Blunt, and the Confederate Army of the Trans-Mississippi under Major General Thomas C. Hindman. Both sides suffered heavy casualties, but it was considered a Union strategic victory as it secured north-west Arkansas for the Union. Thomas Carmichael Hindman was an attorney and Democratic politician before the Civil War, being important to secession, and defended Arkansas as a brigadier general. He took command of a brigade in the Army of Mississippi at Corinth in 1861, fought at the Battle of Shiloh from April 6-7, 1862, and was forced to retreat at the Battle of Prairie Grove on December 7, 1862. He died on September 28, 1868, after being shot by an assassin for unknown reasons.
