Description
This collection contains one broadside, a Proclamation of the Governor, A.H. Garland, designating November 30 "as a day of Public Thanksgiving."
Biographical/Historical Note
Augustus Hill Garland was born on June 11, 1832, in Tennessee. Before the Civil War, he advocated for Arkansas staying within the Union, but supported secession after President Lincoln's call to arms. He served in the Confederate Congress, the House of Representatives, and helped to facilitate the readmission of the state to the Union. In 1865, he argued successfully to the U.S. Supreme Court that preventing former Confederates from arguing cases before the Court was unconstitutional. He was elected to the Senate in 1876 and 1883 and became the first Arkansan to receive a cabinet post when appointed to Attorney General in 1885. On January 26, 1899, he was arguing a case before the Supreme Court and had a stroke, dying a few hours later.
