Biographical/Historical Note

Isaac Asbury Clarke was born on March 22, 1837, in Tennessee and was a captain for the Confederate Army during the U.S. Civil War. When he came back to Berryville, he found that the town and school had been badly burned during the war and opened a new school on January 14, 1867. This school also burned and was eventually relocated to another building. The school closed in 1905 due to Clarke's failing health, and Clarke died on May 26, 1907.
