Description
This collection contains one broadside, General Orders No. 5, issued by Wm. S. Whitten, by order of Brig. Gen. J.M. Thayer (Head Quarters District of the Frontier, Department of Arkansas, Fort Smith), stating that "Stealing, pillaging, and burning fence rails must and shall be stopped."
Biographical/Historical Note
John Milton Thayer (1820-1906) was a general in the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War and was a governor of Nebraska after the war. He commanded the District of the Frontier in Fort Smith, participated in the Camden Expedition, and fought at the Battle of Jenkin's Ferry.
