Biographical/Historical Note

Albert Pike was a lawyer, poet, soldier, and Freemason. In 1831, he joined an expedition exploring the land around the headwaters of the Arkansas and Red rivers, then left for Fort Smith to teach, where he also published political letters in support of Robert Crittenden under the pseudonym "Casca." During his law practice, he represented the Creek and Choctaw tribes for payment of lands, became the first reporter of the Arkansas Supreme Court, and translated French legal volumes into English. When the Mexican War started, he served as the captain of the Little Rock Guards and, during the U.S. Civil War, was appointed brigadier general in the Confederate Army and assigned to the Department of the Indian Territory. He joined the Freemasons in 1850 and was elected a grand commander in 1859. He was born on December 29, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts, and died on April 2, 1891, at the Scottish Rite Temple in Washington D.C.
