This collection contains one broadside, a Circular by Major General Hindman, Fort Smith, requesting citizens to contribute blankets to the Army.

Biographical/Historical Note

Thomas Carmichael Hindman Jr. was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on January 28, 1828. He studied law and was admitted to the bar, was elected as a Democratic Representative for Arkansas, served in the 2nd Mississippi regiment in the Mexican-American War, and commanded the Trans-Mississippi Department for the Confederacy during the U.S. Civil War. After the war ended, he fled to Mexico City to avoid surrender and worked as a coffee planter. When he returned to Helena, Arkansas, he advocated for the Reconstruction and was assassinated in Helena on September 27, 1868.
