1912 February 28
Description
This collection contains one broadside, a document of University of Arkansas students stating their reasons for "holding out for an UNCONDITIONAL re-instatement" after being expelled for publication of a newspaper, the X-Ray.
Biographical/Historical Note
The X-Ray was one of the first "underground" newspapers in Arkansas, published at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. A group of students called the Iconoclasts printed and distributed the first issue on February 24, 1912, and described it as the "Paper Without a Muzzle." It criticized the university, its policies, and its faculty; eventually leading to social change and the expulsion of its publishers. This triggered campus-wide protests in support of the students, and the students were later reinstated.
