Description
This collection contains one broadside, an apportionment of common school revenues in the State Treasury, by James L. Denton, State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Biographical/Historical Note
James L. Denton was born near Clarksville, Arkansas, on July 6, 1836. He was licensed to preach by the Methodist Episcopal Church at the age of twenty and became Superintendent of Public Instruction in 1869 while pastor of the Old Second Street Methodist Church in Little Rock. He died on October 9, 1882, after leaping from the balcony of his friend Judge Greggs' home in Fayetteville "in a fit of insanity." It was claimed that he was driven to this action by the impugning of his honor and harassment from political enemies after his third nomination to the position of Superintendent.
