This collection contains one broadside, General Orders No, 3 issued by Brig. Gen. D. P. Upham (Batesville), "For the purpose of perfecting the organization of the Militia."
Biographical/Historical Note
Daniel Phillips Upham was born in Dudley, Massachusetts, on December 30, 1832, and joined the Union Army in 1863. After the war, he purchased a cotton plantation in Augusta, Arkansas, and was elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives in 1867. After violence from the Ku Klux Klan, Governor Clayton declared martial law in eleven counties, including Woodruff County, and chose Upham to command the militia in his region. He set up headquarters in Batesville and ultimately defeated the Klan in his county. He died of tuberculosis in Dudley on November 18, 1882, and was buried in Little Rock, where he had settled with his wife in 1869.
