Description
This collection contains one broadside, a special order from Sutton F. Cottrell, Provost Marshal, Van Buren, to "collect all the spare blankets, and all carpets, whether in use or not, for the use of the Brigade" during the U.S. Civil War.
Biographical/Historical Note
A Provost Marshal was responsible for maintaining order and other police functions within a military group. It seems that Sutton F. Cottrell was the sheriff, assessor, and tax collector for Crawford County, Arkansas in 1857 before becoming Provost Marshal during the U.S. Civil War. Van Buren is a town within Crawford County.
