Biographical/Historical Note
Minstrel shows were an American theatrical form, popular from the early nineteenth to the early twentieth century, that was founded on the comic enactment of racial stereotypes. Shows consisted of comic skits, variety acts, dancing, and music performances that depicted people specifically of African descent. The shows were performed by mostly white people in make-up or blackface for the purpose of playing the role of Black people. Meriwether Jefferson “Jeff” Thompson (1826 –1876) was a brigadier general in the Missouri State Guard and led Confederate troops in Arkansas and other states during the U.S. Civil War.
