Description

This collection contains a letter from Amis Guthridge, Executive Secretary of White America, Inc., to George Horton, asking for financial help for the White American Inc., organization.

Biographical/Historical Note

White America Inc. was an organization founded in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, in February 1955. The organization was created following the desegregation of schools in Arkansas, to attempt to prevent integration. In 1955, the group attempted to intimidate the local school board of Hoxie to reverse its decision to integrate its schools. A federal judge said that their actions were so severe that they amounted to terrorism and an injunction was placed on the organization and its affiliates. It was the first time in U.S. history that a federal court had placed such an injunction on white supremacist intimidation. In 1956, the organization merged with the Arkansas chapter of the White Citizens' Council in Little Rock.
