This collection contains correspondence between William Besser and Arkansas History Commission Director Dallas Herndon relating to the sale of his portraits of David O. Dodd and Albert Pike to the Arkansas History Commission in 1913.

Biographical/Historical Note

William Besser was an American portrait painter. He was born in Silesia, but immigrated to the United States as a child. He lived and painted in Washington, D.C., Texas, and Kentucky before moving to Arizona for health reasons. He died on April 15, 1915.
