Description
This collection contains a mortgage for the sale of property at lots 7-9 on block 28 in the city of Little Rock to Little Rock Christ Church.
Biographical/Historical Note
The first church service for Little Rock Christ Church was held on March 10, 1839. After the service, a group met at the home of Senator Chester Ashley and organized Christ Episcopal Church. The first sanctuary was constructed in 1840-1841, but was later destroyed by fire in 1873. A new sanctuary was opened in 1887. This sanctuary also burned on October 1, 1938. The third and current sanctuary was completed in 1941. Early members of the church included several future Little Rock Mayors including Lambert Reardon, John Wassell, Samuel Webb, and Gordon Peay. The church has been located at Scott and Capital Streets in Little Rock since 1840.
