This collection contains material related to the Asa Clark family of Fort Smith, including a marriage license, correspondence, a biography, a family history, and genealogical notes.

Biographical/Historical Note

According to the material in this collection, Asa Clark's father came to Arkansas from Bangor, Maine, around 1840, with his family following in 1843. After about six months, the family reached Fort Smith, where they settled. His father built the first brick building in Fort Smith. It was a large hotel known as the St. Charles Hotel. The family lived there and ran the hotel for many years.
