Description
This collection contains six certificates appointing James C. Russell as postmaster under presidents Benjamin Harrison, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Calvin Coolidge. They are dated from 1889 to 1927.
Biographical/Historical Note
James Cassidy Russell was born in Camden, Ouachita County, Arkansas, on June 17, 1857, and lived there all of his life. Russell was a member of the state election committee of the Republican party. He also served as a delegate to the Republican National Conventions. Russell was first appointed as postmaster at Camden on August 2, 1889. He served for around twenty-seven years under five Republican presidents. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge, Elks lodge, Odd Fellows, and the Woodmen of the World. Russell was married to Sallie Hampton Russell; and they had two sons, James Russell, Jr. and Walter Russell. He died on April 28, 1930.
