Description
This collection contains 64 reissues from 1960 of Harper's Weekly magazines, which were originally printed from 1860 to 1862.
Biographical/Historical Note
Fletcher, James, John, and Wesley Harper began the Harper and Brothers Publishing Company in 1825. They started publishing Harper's Monthly Magazine in 1850. Harper's Weekly, A Journal of Civilization, was began in 1857. Its early circulation was around 60,000 subscriptions and grew to around 120,000 by late 1861. It eventually reached around 200,000 before the paper disbanded in 1916. Illustrations were an important part of its content, and it featured some of the most renowned illustrators of the time. It was the most widely read journal in the United States during the period of the Civil War. The reissues in this collection cover the beginning of the Civil War.
