Biographical/Historical Note
The Branch Normal College was opened in 1875 by an act of the Arkansas Legislature. It was originally opened as a branch of the normal (education) department of the Arkansas Industrial University, later known as the University of Arkansas. It is a historically African American college, and its main purpose was to educate African American students to become teachers for the state's African American schools. It was also designated as a land grant university in 1890. It severed ties with the University of Arkansas in 1927 and became Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical, and Normal College (Arkansas AM and N). In 1972, it rejoined the University of Arkansas system, gained university status, and became the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
