Biographical/Historical Note

Southern Arkansas University, formerly known as Southern State College, State Agricultural and Mechanical College, and Third District Agricultural School is a public four-year university in Magnolia, Arkansas. The school was established in 1909 by an Act of the Arkansas Legislature. It was originally an agricultural high school and was named the Third District Agricultural School. Its first term began in January of 1911. In 1925, the school added two years of college coursework and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical School, Third District. Both college and high school courses continued to be offered until 1937, when the high school courses were ceased. The school eventually became a four-year, degree-granting institution, offering third-year college courses in 1950 and fourth-year college courses in 1951. The State Legislature also changed the name of the institution to Southern State College in 1951. The name was again changed in 1976 to Southern Arkansas University after the institution became accredited to offer graduate degrees.
