Biographical/Historical Note
New Galilee was part of the American Baptist Association, which focuses on missions based on the New Testament. The American Baptist Association rejects the idea of a centralized denominational association that sets policy and regulates the missionary work of smaller churches. This organization believes that smaller churches need to have local independence from governing bodies with which they could have little to no representation due to size. New Galilee Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Amity, Arkansas, was founded on January 2, 1955. The first service was held in the Christian Church across from the Amity High School on Highway 84 and Highway 182. New Galilee Church purchased land in 1956 and placed their building at 222 North Hickory Street. The building was expanded in 1972 and remodeled in 1980 due to an momentary increase in membership. By December 27, 2009, the church closed its doors due to a steady decline in membership over the previous twenty-nine years. The final service was held with the last five members of the church in attendance.
