Biographical/Historical Note

Lakeport, Chicot County, Arkansas, is located on the Mississippi River, near Greenville, Mississippi. The project, “From Lakeport to Chicago Oral History,” sought to interview former African American sharecroppers and tenant farmers who migrated from Lakeport to Chicago, Illinois with the hope of escaping the harsh work of the cotton fields, low wages, poor living conditions, and the Jim Crow south. The project looked to uncover some of the determining factors for this out migration. This project was made possible with a grant from the Black History Advisory Committee (now the Black History Commission of Arkansas).
