This collection contains the political papers of Robert Minor Wallace, including his autobiography and biographies, correspondence, speeches, notes, writings, newsclippings, scrapbooks, programs of political events, and miscellaneous publications.
Biographical/Historical Note
Robert Minor Wallace (1857-1942) was an Arkansas lawyer and politician. He was born near New London in Union County, Arkansas. He was an extremely gifted orator and wrote many speeches and essays. His first public office was Alderman in El Dorado. In 1881, he represented Union County in the Arkansas General Assembly. After starting a law practice in El Dorado, Wallace opened a law office in Magnolia in 1884. He continued his political career by holding the office of Prosecuting Attorney. He was also President of the Arkansas Good Roads Association. His greatest political achievement occurred from 1902 to 1911 when he served as a United States Congressman from the Seventh District of Arkansas. After his terms in Congress, he expanded his oratorical career by speaking in the interest of the National Anti-Saloon League, League of Nations Non-Partisan Association, the Confederate Veterans, and the Chautauqua circuit. Wallace was married and widowed twice and had four children. He died November 9, 1942, and is buried in Magnolia, Arkansas.
