Biographical/Historical Note
The South Arkansas African American Historical Society was established in 19___, in El Dorado, Union County, Arkansas by Marzell Smith, a retired teacher. “Looking Backward from Forward,” was an oral history project of the South Arkansas African American Historical Society(SAAAHC). The project’s goal was to collect and preserve the memories of African American community life through oral history. The Society interviewed long-time residents of south Arkansas, including people living in the towns of Strong, Urbana, Junction City, Mt. Holly, Magnolia, Huttig, Smackover, Wesson and other places. Questions: home and family, education, jobs, church, housing, clothing, sports, entertainment, etc. Marzell Smith established museum... The project was made possible with a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council and Black History Advisory Committee (now the Black History Commission of Arkansas).
