This collection contains a grant project report for the Scipio A. Jones Alumni Association in paper and CD-ROM format.
Biographical/Historical Note
Scipio A. Jones Junior and High Schools, both established in 1928, served the black communities in North Little Rock and Sherwood until 1970 with the end of segregated education facilities in Arkansas. The junior high school continued for a short period but closed soon thereafter. The buildings were occupied as child care centers and leased to Shorter Community College. A fire in 1986 led to the destruction of the S.A. Jones High School. Today all that has survived is a brick wall that serves as an exterior wall of a siding supply building located on what is now known as S.A. Jones Dr. in North Little Rock, Arkansas. This collection is comprised of a final report and a digital copy of said report by the Scipio A. Jones Alumni Association grant project that details the history of S.A. Jones, the schools named in his honor, and the minutes from the alumni association. The Black History Commission of Arkansas (BHCA) was created by Act 1233 of 1991 and is composed of seven members appointed by the governor with approval of the Senate. The BHCA is charged with preserving the history of black Arkansans and black communities in Arkansas. This commission also encourages research of Arkansas’s black history and promotes teaching black history in Arkansas schools. Grants are awarded from the BHCA in a concerted effort to ensure Arkansas’s black history is collected and preserved. The Curtis H. Sykes Memorial Grant Program was established in 2009 by Act 660 to honor the program’s namesake who served as chair of the commission from 1993 – 2007.
