This collection is comprised of discs containing digitized McRae “The Tiger” school yearbooks 1953, 1957, 1960, 1964, 1967, 1969, as well as class photographs 1956, 1957, 1958, 1961, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968 and undated.
Biographical/Historical Note
In 1902, Thomas Chipman McRae, who later became governor of Arkansas, donated land to be designated for black schools in Prescott, Nevada County, Arkansas. His namesake McRae School operated from 1902 until the Prescott School District desegregated in 1969. The McRae School Memorial Foundation digitization grant project was awarded a Cutis H. Sykes Memorial grant to collect and preserve photographs and documents related to McRae School located in Prescott, Nevada County, Arkansas. The Black History Commission of Arkansas (BHCA) was created by Act 1233 of 1991 and is composed of seven members appointed by the governor with approval of the Senate. The BHCA is charged with preserving the history of black Arkansans and black communities in Arkansas. This commission also encourages research of Arkansas’s black history and promotes teaching black history in Arkansas schools. Grants are awarded from the BHCA in a concerted effort to ensure Arkansas’s black history is collected and preserved. The Curtis H. Sykes Memorial Grant Program was established in 2009 by Act 660 to honor the program’s namesake who served as chair of the commission from 1993 – 2007.
